Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

A Fabric Development Specialist is responsible for researching, designing, and developing new fabrics to meet performance, aesthetic, and sustainability requirements. This role involves working with textile mills, suppliers, and designers to create innovative fabrics for fashion, sportswear, automotive, home textiles, and technical applications.

Key Responsibilities

Fabric Research & Innovation

  • Develop new fabrics based on market trends, performance needs, and brand requirements.
  • Research fiber compositions, weaving/knitting techniques, and finishing processes.
  • Explore sustainable materials and eco-friendly production methods.

Material Testing & Performance Evaluation

  • Conduct lab tests on fabric properties such as strength, durability, stretch, breathability, and moisture-wicking.
  • Ensure fabrics meet industry standards (e.g., ISO, ASTM, AATCC) and regulatory requirements.
  • Work with quality control teams to assess fabric defects and improvements.

Supplier & Mill Collaboration

  • Source raw materials and work closely with textile mills and vendors to develop custom fabrics.
  • Negotiate specifications, lead times, and costs with suppliers.
  • Oversee sampling, approvals, and bulk production readiness.

Product Development Support

  • Collaborate with fashion designers, engineers, and production teams to integrate fabrics into final products.
  • Provide technical guidance on fabric handling, dyeing, and finishing techniques.
  • Ensure seamless transition from fabric concept to full-scale manufacturing.

Sustainability & Compliance

  • Research and implement sustainable fiber alternatives, biodegradable fabrics, and recycled materials.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental standards and certifications (e.g., GOTS, OEKO-TEX, Bluesign).
  • Optimize fabric development for reduced waste and lower environmental impact.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Textile Science, Textile Engineering, Fashion Design, or a related field.
  • 3-7 years of experience in fabric development, textile manufacturing, or R&D.
  • Strong knowledge of fibers, yarns, weaving, knitting, dyeing, and finishing techniques.
  • Experience in fabric testing, technical specifications, and quality assurance.
  • Ability to analyze market trends and emerging fabric technologies.
  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills for vendor and team collaboration.
  • Understanding of sustainable materials and eco-friendly textile processes.
