Roles & Responsibilities
The Employment Law Advisor will provide expert legal advice and support on all employment-related matters to ensure compliance with current employment laws, minimize legal risks, and promote a fair and positive work environment. The role involves advising on employee relations issues, employment disputes, disciplinary matters, HR policies, and other legal aspects of workforce management.
Key Responsibilities:
Legal Advice & Support:Advise HR, managers, and business leaders on a range of employment law issues, including but not limited to discrimination, harassment, unfair dismissal, contractual disputes, employee benefits, and workplace health and safety.
Offer practical, legally sound solutions that align with the company’s business objectives.Provide day-to-day support to HR departments and line managers in managing employment-related matters.
Employment Law Compliance:Ensure the organization’s policies and practices comply with relevant local, state, and federal employment laws and regulations (e.g., labor laws, Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) laws, health and safety regulations).
Review and update employment contracts, employee handbooks, and HR policies to ensure compliance.
Keep the organization informed about changes in employment law and industry standards.
Dispute Resolution:Provide support in managing employee disputes, including grievance procedures, disciplinary actions, and conflict resolution.Represent the organization in employment tribunals, arbitration, and other legal proceedings when required.
Mediate and negotiate settlements in employment disputes, minimizing the risk of litigation.
Training & Development:Conduct training sessions for HR teams, managers, and staff on employment law matters, such as anti-discrimination, workplace harassment, performance management, and employee rights.Educate employees and management on workplace best practices and legal responsibilities.
Document Drafting & Review:Draft, review, and amend employment-related documentation, including contracts of employment, non-compete agreements, confidentiality agreements, and other legal documents.Ensure legal compliance in all employee-related documentation, including employment contracts, termination letters, and internal memos.
Risk Management:Assist in identifying potential legal risks related to employment practices and work with the management team to develop strategies to minimize these risks.Provide legal advice on redundancies, restructures, and TUPE (Transfer of Undertakings (Protection of Employment)) regulations.
HR Policy Development:Work closely with the HR team to develop and implement effective HR policies that ensure legal compliance and promote a positive workplace culture.Review and monitor existing HR policies to ensure they align with best practices and legal requirements.
Qualifications:
Education:A law degree or equivalent qualification in employment law.
A legal qualification (e.g., Solicitor, Barrister, or Legal Executive) is preferred.
Experience:Proven experience working in employment law, ideally within a corporate environment or in-house legal team.
Experience providing legal advice on a wide range of employment law matters, including employee relations, compliance, disputes, and litigation.Previous experience representing clients in employment tribunals or courts is advantageous.
Skills:In-depth knowledge of local and international employment law and regulations.
Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to present complex legal concepts clearly.
Excellent negotiation and dispute resolution skills.
Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple priorities.
Attention to detail and strong analytical skills.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and legal research tools.
